Abe Simpson Death: Is Grampa Still Alive in The Simpsons?

Abe Simpson Death
Abraham Simpson, better known as Grampa, has not permanently died in The Simpsons. Homer’s father remains a recurring character

Abraham Simpson, better known as Grampa, has not permanently died in The Simpsons. Homer’s father remains a recurring character, although several stories have played with the possibility of losing him. If you remember the family receiving news of his death, there is an explanation behind that scene.

Is Abe Simpson Still Alive?

Abe Simpson is alive in the show’s regular storyline and lives at the Springfield Retirement Castle. He is Homer’s father and the grandfather of Bart, Lisa and Maggie. His complaints, wandering stories and strained relationship with Homer have made him a familiar part of Springfield.

Grampa is voiced by Dan Castellaneta, who also provides Homer’s voice. According to Wikipedia’s character profile, Abe first appeared in the 1988 short “Grandpa and the Kids,” before The Simpsons became a standalone television series.

That early appearance already included a joke about his death. When his grandchildren stopped listening to his stories, Grampa pretended to die to get their attention. Death jokes have therefore been part of his character since the beginning.

Still, a scene where Abe appears dead does not automatically mean the series has written him out. The surrounding story matters, particularly when the joke depends on someone getting the wrong idea. His earliest appearance is a good example: the apparent tragedy is simply Grampa’s attempt to regain his audience.

The Episode Where Grampa Is Mistaken for Someone Else

“The Old Man and the Key,” Season 13, Episode 13, opens with news that Grampa has died. It originally aired on March 10, 2002.

The Simpson family rushes to the retirement home, expecting the worst. Once they arrive, they discover that Abe is alive. Another resident, named Stimson, has died, and the family has received the wrong information. The similar names explain the misunderstanding.

Anyone remembering only the opening could easily mistake it for an episode about Abe’s death. Watching the rest makes the outcome clear: Grampa survives and becomes the focus of a story about romance and driving.

He takes an interest in Zelda, a new resident at the retirement home, and starts driving again to impress her. His use of Homer’s car causes trouble, and the story eventually takes him to Branson, Missouri.

The opening announcement sets up a joke before the episode moves into Grampa’s romantic adventures. There is no funeral for Abe or lasting loss for the Simpson family in this episode.

Grampa’s Heart Attack in Season Two

Abe also has a health scare in “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” Season 2, Episode 15, which first aired on February 21, 1991.

After an argument at a movie theater, he suffers a mild heart attack. The experience leaves him thinking about his mortality and prompts him to tell Homer a family secret: Homer has a brother named Herb Powell.

Fortunately, Abe survives. The episode then follows Homer’s efforts to find Herb and the disastrous consequences of helping him design a car.

Describing this episode simply as “Abe Simpson’s death” leaves out what actually happens. The heart attack starts a family revelation, rather than ending Grampa’s story.

For viewers trying to identify a remembered scene, these two episodes offer different answers. The retirement home announcement is a case of mistaken identity. The hospital visit follows a heart attack that Abe survives. Neither marks his permanent departure from The Simpsons.
