Kingston Market Place Fire Damages Stalls and Businesses

Firefighters tackled a blaze at Market Place in Kingston upon Thames, England, early on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. Four fire engines and about 25 firefighters attended.

London Fire Brigade received the first of six emergency calls at 4:33 a.m. Crews from Kingston, Surbiton, New Malden and nearby stations responded, extinguishing the fire by 6:08 a.m.

Several market stalls were destroyed. Flames also damaged the fronts of nearby properties and a small section of a neighbouring roof. Metropolitan Police officers evacuated eight people from the area. No injuries were reported.

The cause remains under investigation by the fire brigade and Metropolitan Police. Their initial update did not identify what started the blaze.

Kingston Council said the Market Place had been cordoned off, with businesses inside the restricted area unable to trade until further notice. The council said it was monitoring developments and would provide another update when more information became available. No reopening date was given in its statement.

Mark Novak Remembered for Decades With Meridian Baseball

Mark Alan Novak, the longtime Meridian baseball coach, died on October 3, 2026, aged 59. His published obituary describes a lengthy illness but does not specify a medical cause of death.

A lifelong Sanford resident, Novak graduated from Meridian High School in 1984. His involvement with the school’s baseball programme continued from graduation through 2026. He also coached football, basketball and youth sports, spending much of his adult life working with young athletes.

His connection to Meridian baseball began before graduation, when he served as team manager for the Mustangs’ 1982 state championship team. He became varsity head coach in 2007 and recorded more than 400 victories in that role.

He was inducted into the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2025, recognising his contribution to the sport.

Colleagues remembered his humour, patience and commitment to players. Even when illness kept him away from games, he wanted his athletes to know he was thinking of them.

A memorial service for family and friends is scheduled for October 9 at 1 p.m. at Assumption B.V.M. Catholic Church, with visitation beginning an hour earlier, according to the published funeral arrangements.
